Frome, Somerset

2025

Adventures at the Library

For six weeks this winter, we filled Frome Library with free daily activities to encourage people to get warm and creative. We had lunchtime concerts and dance sessions, quizzes and treasure hunts, morning workshops for adults and after school clubs for young people. Highlights were our weekly ‘Young Illustrators Club’ and ‘Story Inventors’ sessions.

Then we set off to other Somerset towns for pop-up adventures with games, storytelling performances and mass paper aeroplane launches!

This project was supported by Somerset Community Foundation’s ‘Help for Winter’ fund.

2024

Adventures at Frome Town Hall

For one incredible day at Frome Town Hall, kids were in charge. The Mayor officially handed over power of the town, and all adults had to sign a document giving control to young people… walls and ceilings were covered in paint, a forest was built inside a meeting room; there was music, power tools, and some brilliant ‘new rules’ for the town.

Adventures at Frome Museum

Frome Museum asked us to help them bring their collections to life for young people… so we created a time-travelling expedition! With local historians, designers and performers, we made an interactive trail through Frome’s past. Young audiences completed a secret mission, rescuing objects lost in history, while exploring Roman Somerset, Frome’s textile heyday, Victorian crafts, Longleat’s first vets and more. Over half our visitors had never stepped inside the Museum before.

Adventures in Storytelling

In Summer 2024 we ran a series of storytelling projects in Frome schools, supporting young people to create their own imaginative worlds. And we popped-up with performances at the Children’s Festival, the River Festival and the Library. We continue to visit schools regularly to invent wild original tales, and welcome new collaborations.

Lunch Bunch

Grown-ups… come and play!

Last autumn, we invited adults to have some fun on their lunch break. To bring lunch and join us for a game and a chat. We popped up in different locations in Frome Town Centre, offering people a chance to connect with others in a totally laid-back environment.

We hope to announce more dates soon.

2022-23

Wild in East Woodlands

A weekend of adventures: family forest crafts, live music, storytelling, delicious food and woodland walks on the edge of Longleat Forest. We hosted this community gathering in Autumn 2022, in partnership with family support charity Purple Elephant, as part of settling in to our new home in Frome. Here’s a gallery of photos by Paul Blakemore.

Supporting Community Artists in Frome

In 2023, we hosted a first series of gatherings for creative folk, as well as one-to-one conversations with artists looking to develop their own community projects. This is now part of our ongoing work in Frome.

2018-2019
Weston-super-Mare

Each of these projects grew out of a collaboration between visiting national artists and inspiring local community groups.

Voices of Worle

A group of older Worle residents collaborated with composer Verity Standen and filmmaker Adam Laity to explore personal histories. And we gathered a local choir to perform songs inspired by these stories.

Abandon

We worked with an inspiring group of people with experience of addiction, together with dance artists Clare Reynolds & Ania Varez, to create a bold dance performance for our festival in November.

Guerrilla Media Unit

We’ve been creating and sharing wild stories about Weston... while developing skills in video, podcasting, writing and more, hosted by theatre director & radio producer John Norton.

Spies in Schools

Over the course of a year, theatre artists Nigel Barrett & Louise Mari devised adventures with eight Weston primary schools - culminating in a huge performance on the beach in the summer.

Weston Artspace

We opened a free studio for Weston-super-Mare’s creative community to meet, work, develop skills and share ideas.

We shared all of these projects with a public audience at our Terrestrial Festival in November 2019. You can explore the full programme here, and watch a film following the journey of these projects made by our friends at Black Cat Films.
